Virtual and local events happening for Eating Disorders Awareness Week

Jan 31, 2023 | 10:34 AM

The Eating Disorder Support Network of Alberta (EDSNA) is again hosting events this February for Eating Disorder Awareness Week (Feb. 1-7).

According to the EDSNA, eating disorders affect approximately 2.7 million Canadians, with many going under-recognized, under-diagnosed and under-treated.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week aims to increase knowledge surrounding eating disorders and the support available in the province and across the country, the EDSNA says.

“Eating Disorders can affect anyone. They do not discriminate based upon age, race, gender identity, sexuality, socioeconomic status or weight. This year, we are exploring these topics, discussing with experts and having genuine conversations with people,” says EDSNA Acting Executive Director Angie Mellen.

“We are hoping to continue to break down these stereotypes of who people think can be affected by an eating disorder. This will in turn bring down barriers for those seeking support.”

Adds Marlies van Dijk, Executive Director of the Silver Linings Foundation, “We are seeing that eating disorders are increasingly being recognized as a mental illness and not an issue of vanity. We are advocating for more education and support services for youth and families which are currently lacking in Alberta.”

Events for the week are taking place in Edmonton, Calgary and virtually, with other recognitions taking place. For more information and to register, visit edsna.ca.
