Sylvan Lakers may see an increase to their waste and sewage expenses in 2023.

Town council passed first reading to the Water and Sewage Amending Bylaw at Monday’s meeting to provide rate increases to the services’ monthly fixed charge, consumption, and collection rates.

For the average household with a water usage of 20 metres cubed, Town officials say the rate increase will add approximately $5.54 to a monthly utility bill or $66.48 per year.

Administration says the rate increases for residential and non-residential, calculated using 12 months, will generate about $437,106 per year in Water and Wastewater revenue. More specifically, water would generate $185,415 in flat rate and consumption while wastewater would generate $251,691 in flat rate and collection.

Meantime, the increase to the Truckfill Station is estimated to generate an additional $1,900 per year.

Hotels, motels, bed and breakfast, and campgrounds with 13 rooms or more are expected to generate an additional $1,854 per year.

Town officials say the Water and Sewage rates were evaluated during the 2023 budget presentations. They say adjustments were proposed to ensure that revenues received from users of the utility systems are sufficient to cover the operational costs, maintain the systems, and help fund capital projects identified in the Water, Wastewater and Stormwater Master Plans and improvements such as water and sanitary main replacement.

“As material and product costs to operate continue to rise due to inflation, increased demand, and significantly higher import prices, the Environmental Services Department is committed to managing these costs and staying efficient while upholding the Town’s commitment to a sustainable future. These rate adjustments will help ensure the reliability and affordability of quality water, wastewater, and stormwater services throughout the Town of Sylvan Lake,” administration said in the council meeting agenda.

A public hearing along with second and third reading of the proposed bylaw are schedule for Feb. 13.
