Central Alberta Family Expo celebrating 10th birthday this Saturday

May 27, 2022 | 5:32 PM

The Central Alberta Family Expo will be celebrating its 10th birthday in Red Deer on Saturday, May 28.

“Instead of an anniversary, we’re calling it a birthday party because we’re the family group,” said Pat Moore, co-owner and producer of the Expo.

From 10 a.m. – 7 p.m., families with children or soon-to-be expecting, can enjoy a fun-filled trade show and exposition with an abundance of activities and entertainment.

New this year, the expo will be held at CrossRoads Church (38105, Range Rd 275) where, for the first time, outdoor activities will accompany indoor games. Moore says due to the uncertain nature of the pandemic, she and co-owner Nancy Paish, made the event for one day instead of two and wanted to ensure there were options for all attendees to enjoy.

Some of the fun in store for this year’s Expo include:

  • Air Guitar Contest
  • Beyblade Competition
  • Hula Hoop Contest
  • Plant Potting
  • Red Deer City Soccer Association Soccer Pitch
  • Live Music
  • Taekwondo Demonstration
  • And more!

Moore says over 40 family-friendly vendors will be present with other food stations and chances to win multiple prizes. While on average, she says the Expo receives around 6,000 attendees yearly, she hopes to see at least 3,000 this weekend.

“It is definitely just a fun-filled atmosphere to entertain and yet to provide an opportunity for local businesses to share their year information as well,” she said.

“By having that opportunity for them to connect with the families, but also to offer an opportunity for families to come out together and to enjoy the day; to enjoy each other.”

This year, proceeds will be donated to the Red Deer Firefighters Children’s Charity, whose mission aims to remove barriers and ensure all children have equal access to learn and play.

The Red Deer Food Bank will also be present to collect non-perishable food items and will have 100 grocery bags prepared by central Alberta Co-op for attendees to purchase at $10 each as a donation. The Mustard Seed will be raising funds as well, bringing along Spider-Man to speak with the children and supervise the Power Wheels Track.

The last hour of the Expo will be dedicated for a wind-up party to celebrate their 10th birthday. Guests are encouraged to wear their favorite costume for a mini parade and there will be dancing, prizes, a piñata, and a special birthday cake for all to enjoy.

The Expo is free for children under 15 years of age while admissions for adults is $10 at the door.

While most activities are free upon entry, a small fee will be required for certain booths like face painting, photos with Star Wars characters, and bouncy houses, among others.
