Red Deer RCMP set for firearm upgrade, full deployment expected by 2028

The Red Deer RCMP are set to receive new guns.

According to a letter submitted to Red Deer city council by Red Deer Municipal RCMP Detachment Supt. Holly Glassford said the RCMP at a national level were recently awarded a contract for a new, modernized general duty service pistol to replace its current firearms.

The model selected is the Glock 45 MOS 7 Duty Pistol, which will be issued with a red dot sight, a weapon-mounted light, three magazines, interchangeable grip components, a lanyard loop attachment, and a secure carrying case.

Glassford indicated the pistol will be rolled out to detachments in phases based on operational needs, with full deployment anticipated by summer 2028.

“A transition of this scale requires comprehensive training to ensure safe and effective use,” she wrote in the letter. “A training program has been developed and will begin rolling out to instructors this summer. A mandatory four-day training program for frontline officers is expected to follow in late summer and fall, concluding with annual firearms qualification.”

She said the training schedules are being developed to ensure there is no impact on frontline service delivery.

In addition, investments in equipment such as this, she said, are essential to maintaining high standards of policing and adapting to evolving operational demands.
