COVID-19 update for May 18

Alberta Health has released its latest weekly report on COVID-19. The numbers reported in this update reflect data from May 10-16, 2022.

During that time, 3,614 cases were confirmed across the province for a daily average of 516.

  • May 10: 658 cases, 3,145 tests completed
  • May 11: 587 cases, 3,116 tests completed
  • May 12: 604 cases, 3,187 tests completed
  • May 13: 472 cases, 2,339 tests completed
  • May 14: 451 cases, 2,628 tests completed
  • May 15: 355 cases, 1,840 tests completed
  • May 16: 487 cases, 2,094 tests completed

18,349 tests were conducted over the last week, meaning the positivity rate was 19.7 per cent. Health Minister Jason Copping stated earlier this week that the falling positivity rate was another sign that Alberta is moving past the BA.2 wave of COVID-19.

Over the last week, 61 Albertans died from COVID including 24 in the Calgary Zone, 17 in the Edmonton Zone, 10 in the North Zone, eight in the Central Zone, and two in the South Zone. To date, 4,452 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 1,165 patients are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 including 42 who have been admitted to intensive care. This marks deceases of 60 for hospitalizations and five for ICU compared to last week’s report.

Below is a breakdown of COVID-19 in each health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone
    • 233,414 cases
    • 452 in hospital, 13 in ICU
    • 1,228 deaths (24 new)
  • Edmonton Zone
    • 185,355 cases
    • 369 in hospital, 19 in ICU
    • 1,716 deaths (17 new)
  • North Zone
    • 62,809 cases
    • 108 in hospital, three in ICU
    • 541 deaths (10 new)
  • Central Zone
    • 58,916 cases
    • 161 in hospital, three in ICU
    • 575 deaths (eight new)
  • South Zone
    • 37,628 cases
    • 75 in hospital, four in ICU
    • 392 deaths (two new)

Red Deer’s seven-day new case rate (per 100k) is 74.3, while the number of new cases in the last seven days is 79. There have been 15,040 cases of COVID-19 identified in Red Deer since the start of the pandemic, with 110 deaths reported.
