Senior Bowl returns to the field in Lacombe this weekend

May 18, 2022 | 2:56 PM

After a two year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Senior Bowl – an annual high school football all-star game featuring graduating Grade 12’s – returns to Lacombe’s MEGlobal Athletic Park on Monday, May 23, 2022.

This year’s game features some local talent as well, including receiver Gabe Hiebert from the Lacombe Rams, defensive back John Sansom from Red Deer’s Lindsay Thurber Raiders, fellow Raider Spencer Juricic – a running back from Rocky Mountain House, and Lukas Lynch – a defensive lineman from the Lindsay Thurber Raiders.

The first Senior Bowl was held at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium in 1990 and saw the Southern Alberta or “South” team defeat the North 19-16. Twenty nine annual games followed that one with the “South” holding a 16-13-1 edge in victories (the tie game came in 2001) over the “North” before the pandemic hit pause in 2020.

The dividing line separating the 120 high schools that can send players to try out for this event is just south of the City of Red Deer and Football Alberta officials say it’ fitting when the province will be awash in “Battle of Alberta” fever at the NHL level, that one of its most consistent battles returns to the field this year.

New items in the delivery will see the game played outside the major cities for the first time to take advantage of the burgeoning development of new stadiums across the province. As well, it will also feature the first time both teams have not been on site together alternating practices.

The “North” team will open its training camp at Emerald Hills Stadium in Sherwood Park on Friday, while the “South” will do the same at Shouldice Park in Calgary before both teams travel to Lacombe for the game on Monday.

Head coaches for the teams are selected from the teams that participated in the ASAA’s Alberta Bowl last November at the Tier III level. Vince Orieux from Holy Rosary H.S. in Lloydminster will guide the “North” while his counterpart will be Rob McNab from Cochrane H.S. leading the “South” staff. These two are very familiar, having coached against each other in the last six Provincial Tier III Championship Games.

Game time is Noon on Monday, May 23, 2022 at Lacombe’s MEGlobal Athletic Park. Tickets are available at the door for $10.

As a bonus to this event, the Annual 6-A-SIDE HIGH SCHOOL ALL-STAR GAME also returns and will take place a day earlier at the same location (Sunday, May 22 at NOON, MEGlobal Athletic Park) featuring the top players from Alberta’s high schools playing at the 6-a-side level.

Those players will be competing for spots on the 6-a-side Team Alberta that will play their counterparts from Saskatchewan, also at Lacombe’s MEGlobal Athletic Park on June 12.

On the holiday Monday, Football Alberta will also be running three games at Red Deer’s Great Chief Park as a part of their Bantam Showcase featuring the provinces top players at the U16 level. These three games will be the springboard for the start of the selections leading to the formation of Team Alberta U16 that will be competing at the Western Challenge in Langley, B.C. from July 1-7, 2022.

The games are as follows:

Great Chief Park – Red Deer: Monday, May 23rd, 2022

10:00 a.m. Edmonton North Golden Bears vs. Calgary Metro Dinos

1:00 p.m. Southern Alberta Knights vs. Calgary Colts
