The Town of Penhold is now able to complete their Community Hub, to be located south of the Penhold Regional Multiplex, after receiving a $490,000 investment from the federal government.

“All levels of Government continue to focus on the health and wellness of its people. This multi-dimensional project will see our vision to create an environment with a focus on health, wellness, community engagement and attraction become a reality,” said Mike Yargeau, Mayor of Penhold.

Announced Tuesday, the investment, along with previous funding from the Penhold & District Optimist Club and a donation from long standing local family Stewart and Eileen Ford, will allow the Town to expand recreational space and Penhold’s trail system beginning this spring.

Some of the planned developments include:

  • Trail connectivity
  • Furnishings such as benches and tables
  • Common area
  • Concession and restroom
  • Further development of Pump track/Skate park area
  • Ball Diamond development

“The Town of Penhold is a strong community, believing in wellness and promoting mental health. Expanding the Community Hub will help our community overcome the challenges of the pandemic,” the Town said in a statement.

The federal funding is provided through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund, administered in Alberta by Prairies Economic Development Canada. The Town confirmed it will be using the funds to continue developing the area into “the community vision of recreational lands” throughout the year.

“Through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund, our government is making investments to increase the accessibility of community spaces, create green infrastructure and reinvent outdoor spaces. Our investment to expand Penhold’s recreational space and trail system will help ensure residents of all ages and abilities can benefit from accessible outdoor activities in their community,” said Daniel Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada and Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.

Officials say the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF) aims to help communities rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic. The fund assists non-profit organizations, municipalities, community groups, and Indigenous communities across Canada to build and improve community infrastructure projects. The CCRF is a two-year $500 million infrastructure program by the Government of Canada to revitalize communities across the country.

“Accessible and modern recreational amenities are at the heart of Alberta’s vibrant communities. Today’s investment to revitalize important community spaces in Penhold will provide residents with opportunities for inclusive, active and healthy living while supporting this community’s high quality of life for years to come,” said Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Tourism and Associate Minister of Finance.
