Charity Checkstop fundraiser in Blackfalds on Dec. 11

The Central Alberta Victim & Witness Support Society (CAVWSS) along with the Blackfalds RCMP will be hoping drivers pull over for them on Dec. 11, and it’s all for a good cause.

Holding a Charity Checkstop fundraiser, donations will assist the non-profit in supporting victims and witnesses of crime and trauma throughout central Alberta.

The event runs from 11-2, with RCMP officers, CAVWSS staff, advocates, and community volunteers set-up on Highway 2A between the Blackfalds Motor Inn and Fas Gas. Santa Claus will be in attendance and handing out candy canes and doggie treats.

Donations in the form of cash, debit or credit card will be gratefully accepted. Gift cards for grocery, fuel and essentials are also welcomed.

CAVWSS is a non-profit registered charity organization that supports victims and witnesses of crime and tragedy. The organization helps individuals and families bridge the gap from hurt to hope by providing professional and compassionate direct support, information, referral and education. Trained staff and advocates are available 24/7 and 365 days a year to ensure victims and witnesses do not have to face their journey alone.

“Any one of us could become a victim or witness of crime and tragedy at any given time and be faced with an overwhelming, emotional and difficult road ahead,” says Executive Director, Gloria Derksen, adding that the team at CAVWSS is there to walk alongside clients on their road to recovery.

The organization’s funds support services related to: homicide, family and domestic violence, sexual assault, physical assault, armed robbery, robbery, theft, fraud, break & enter, vandalism, serious motor vehicle collisions, sudden death, next of kin notifications, suicides, fire or multi-casualty disasters and school crisis.

“In past years CAVWSS has benefitted from the tremendous support of the community at these events and we are truly grateful for the generosity of our donors,” says Amber Casey, Fund Development Coordinator.
