Nov 7, 2021 | 10:40 PM

While the Red Deer Rebels were ultimately defeated by the Winnipeg ICE this Sunday afternoon at Wayne Fleming Arena, they did not let the home team win that easy.

In an electrifying first period, Winnipeg started strong with their first goal on Rebels’ netminder Connor Ungar at 9:15 by Zachary Benson scoring his seventh goal of the season, assisted by Connor McClennon and Matthew Savoie.

Just 15 seconds after, the ICE’s Mikey Milne scored his 11th goal of the season, with help from Jakin Smallwood and Conor Geekie.

Their 2-0 lead wasn’t celebrated for long, however, as the Rebels took advantage of their power play, with Maximilian Straule in the box for holding. Liam Keeler scored just over a minute later, his sixth of the season, assisted by Jayden Grubbe, on Winnipeg’s goalie Gage Alexander, the game now 2-1.

Winnipeg’s Jakin Smallwood scored next at 16:24 on a power play with the Rebel’s Ben King in the box for hooking, pushing the ICE lead to 3-1. It was Smallwood’s fifth goal of the season and aided by Conor Geekie and Benjamin Zloty.

The ICE added to their lead less than two minutes later, with Zachary Benson scoring his eighth of the season, and Matthew Savoie assisting.

The period closed 4-1 in favour of the ICE, as they profited from one-third of their shots on goal (12) compared to Red Deer’s (8).

The second period began with a goalie change for Red Deer, with Chase Coward between the pipes.

Unfazed, the ICE’s Mikey Milne scored his second goal of the game and 12th of the season at 7:21, assisted by Conor Geekie and Chase Bertholet, furthering their lead to 5-1.

With a four-minute man advantage thanks to a double high-sticking penalty to the Rebel’s Kai Uchacz, Winnipeg’s Benjamin Zloty scored his second goal of the season at 11:13. Skyler Bruce and Matthew Savoie assisted on the goal with the game now 6-1.

With tensions high in the rink, Red Deer’s Hunter Mayo and Winnipeg’s Chase Bertholet received penalties for roughing at 14:34. However, 20 seconds later the ICE went down a man due to a tripping penalty to Mikey Milne.

With only three of Winnipeg’s skaters on the ice, Arshdeep Bains seized the opportunity for the Rebels at the 16:00 mark scoring his seventh goal of the season, assisted by Blake Stevenson and Christoffer Sedoff.

The period ended 6-2 Winnipeg, with the ICE also outshooting Red Deer 15-6 in the second period.

Then, just over two minutes into the third period, Red Deer’s Carter Anderson scored his third goal of the season, unassisted, cutting Winnipeg’s lead in half to 6-3.

With the ICE’s Nolan Orzeck on a penalty for cross checking, the Rebel’s Blake Stevenson scored on the power play, his seventh of the season, at 14:37. The goal made it 6-4 Winnipeg, with assists coming from Ben King and Kai Uchacz.

With the clock ticking down and a tying goal potentially within reach, the Rebel’s pulled their goalie at the 17:10 mark but were unable to score with the extra skater. At 18:00, Winnipeg’s Carson Lambus scored his fifth goal of the season, assisted by Nolan Orzeck, on the empty net, giving the ICE a 7-4 lead.

Despite being down by three goals and less than a minute to play, the Rebels Matteo Fabrizi made scored his first of the season at the 19:08 mark, assisted by Jace Isley to make it 7-5.

The Rebels outshot the ICE 11-6 in the third period, with 1total shots finishing 33-25 in favour of Winnipeg.

The Rebels went 3/8 on the power play while the ICE capitalized 2/4 times with the man advantage.

The third star of the game went to Red Deer’s Blake Stevenson. The second star went to Winnipeg’s Mikey Milne, and the first star to his teammate Zachary Benson.

The loss drops the Rebels’ record to 9-6-1, while Winnipeg improves to 14-1-0.

The Rebels now head west to Saskatchewan with a game Tuesday, Nov. 9 at Mosaic Place against the Moose Jaw Warriors at 7 p.m. CDT (6 p.m. MT).
