Midfielder Paige Kalbfleisch played an important role in the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team earning a pair of wins this past weekend and advancing to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Soccer South Division final.

In Friday’s 7-3 quarter-final win over the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings, the first-year Bachelor of Science Nursing student assisted on the Queens’ opening goal.

Against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, the talented student-athlete from Sherwood Park had a monumental performance in the south semi-finals. Kalbfleisch assisted on the Queens’ first goal, which tied the game in the 78th minute. Then in double overtime, she scored in the 105th minute, helping the Polytechnic earn a 2-1 road decision. Kalbfleisch was named the Queens Player of the Game.

On Saturday, October 23, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens will face the SAIT Trojans in the ACAC South Division final in Calgary.

Devin Saunders – Kings Cross Country Running

Devin Saunders had an outstanding race for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Cross Country Running team at Running Room Grand Prix #3 this past Saturday. The third-year student-athlete was a key contributor in helping the Kings earn second place as a group. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (34 points) trailed first place SAIT (30) by only four points, and impressively ranked 26 points ahead of third place Lethbridge College (60).

Individually, the Bachelor of Business Administration General Management student ran a personal best, completing the 8 km course in 27:49 and finishing fifth among ACAC male participants. Saunders provides valuable leadership on the young Red Deer Polytechnic Cross Country Running team.

Red Deer’s Saunders and his teammates are ready to compete for a medal at the ACAC Cross Country Running Championships on Saturday, October 30 in Camrose.

THE WEEK TO COME

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Soccer squads will compete against the SAIT Trojans in the playoffs.

Here is a summary of what is happening this week:

Queens Soccer | Saturday, October 23 | 12 pm | SAIT Field

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team will play the SAIT Trojans in the ACAC South Division final in Calgary. The Queens have played well in the postseason and enter this match with momentum after defeating the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in double overtime in the division semi-finals. SAIT blanked Medicine Hat College 5-0 in its semi-final match. In the regular season, the Trojans downed the Queens 2-0, but Red Deer Polytechnic (4-2-0) played well and pushed the undefeated SAIT (6-0-0) squad. The NAIT Ooks and Concordia University Thunder will battle in the ACAC North Division final. The winners of Saturday’s north and south matches will play for ACAC gold.

Kings Soccer | Saturday, October 23 | 2 pm | SAIT Field

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer team will challenge the SAIT Trojans in the ACAC South Division final on the road. SAIT (5-0-1) picked up a 4-0 decision over the Kings (4-1-1) during the regular season, but Red Deer Polytechnic didn’t have its most consistent performance. The Trojans dropped the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 5-1 in the South Division semi-finals. The NAIT Ooks and Lakeland College Rustlers will battle in the ACAC North Division final. The winners from the north and south finals will meet for ACAC gold.
