two bills tabled in parliament

AGLC supports bills to allow single event sports betting

Albertans could see new options for gambling on sports with the new bills that have been introduced in Parliament.

Bill C-13, and Bill C-218 would see Albertans over the age of 18 able to bet on single event sports.

Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis has been supportive of this move as the province’s lone regulated gambling website, PlayAlberta.ca, would be able to expand. AGLS says this would generate more funding for Alberta’s General Revenue Fund, which supports programs and services throughout the province.

AGLC says the fund generated over $1.4 billion in net gaming income in 2019-20.

Niaz Nejad, Chief Operating Officer for the AGLC, says they estimate $3 billion is lost every year to offshore gambling websites.

“Under the current rules in place, Albertans were unable to place a single wager on the outcome of either of this past weekend’s battle of Alberta or the NFL championship game between the Chiefs and the Buccaneers,” he points out.

“AGLC has supported modernized gambling laws for a number of years, including allowing for single event sports wagering. This would present the ability to give legal age Albertans new and unique options on their favourite sporting events,” added Kandice Machado, AGLC’s Acting President and CEO.

“Players would be able to choose a game or proposition that gives them greater odds of a successful bet, picking between markets such as the game outcome, point spread or how many shots a player registers.”
