Search taking place west of Nordegg for overdue hiker

Dec 13, 2020 | 10:36 AM

locateUPDATE – 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13

A hiker not heard from since embarking on a day trip Saturday in the Nordegg area has been located.

Rocky Mountain House RCMP say Keith Morris, who is 45, is alive and well. He was located near Siffleur Falls, which is about 45 minutes southwest of Nordegg in the Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve off Highway 11.

“Morris had lost his bearings during his hike and was not able to locate his vehicle,” Mounties say. “Mr. Morris did not sustain any injuries but is being assessed by Emergency Medical Services as a precaution.”

Police say they are extremely pleased with this outcome and are taking this opportunity to remind everyone of the potential dangers of remote outdoor activity in cold temperatures.

“Always ensure before heading out that you are well prepared, someone knows where you are going, you are dressed for the weather and check for adverse weather conditions.”

Alberta RCMP say members from the detachment in Rocky Mountain House are searching for a missing hiker last seek Saturday morning.

It was 11 a.m. on Dec. 12 when 45-year-old Keith Morris told his parents he was going for a hike or a cross-country ski west of Nordegg, and that he would return by 3 p.m.

He did not return and has not been heard from since his departure.

Morris and his family are not from the area and were staying at a cabin in Nordegg.

He was last seen leaving the cabin in a silver 2007 Toyota Corolla with Alberta licence plate BYW161. Morris was wearing winter clothing including a black puffy jacket and a black/grey toque.

He is described as Caucasian, 5’10” tall with a slender build, and he has brown hair.

“A coordinated search between Rocky Mountain House RCMP, neighbouring RCMP detachments and Search and Rescue is underway,” an RCMP statement says.

“Given the extreme cold temperatures last night and today, the RCMP is very concerned about Keith Morris’s wellbeing.”

If you have any information that could assist the RCMP in locating Morris, contact the Rocky Mountain RCMP at 403-845-2881.
