Five more cases of COVID-19 have been identified among individuals at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School.

“To be clear, in the past week we have been made aware of nine individuals from our school population of approximately 1900 people that have been infected,” Principal Chris Good said Thursday in a notification letter to parents and guardians.

“At this point in time we have not received any information that transmission is happening in our school. Our investigations lead us to believe that most of these cases have been brought into our school from the community,” Good added, noting that Alberta Health Services will investigate the origins of all the cases and make recommendations if necessary.

Prior to this week, Lindsay Thurber had reported just one case of COVID-19 since the start of the school year.

An outbreak is declared when there are two or more confirmed cases in a school setting within a 14 day period where disease could have been acquired or transmitted in the school. Any school meeting this definition will be reported on the province’s status map.

The lone school Red Deer school outbreak listed as of Thursday is Holy Family School.

Oriole Park School, Central Middle School and St. Teresa of Avila School each reported cases of COVID-19 this week.
