Sylvan Lake’s newest sports park is getting an assist from Red Deer County.

Council on Tuesday approved $350,000 for the new multi-sport park located in southwest Sylvan Lake.

The $23 million park will feature six baseball diamonds, outdoor hockey rink, volleyball courts, soccer and multi-sport fields and a splash park.

The Town of Sylvan Lake had approached Red Deer County looking for a nearly $1.1 million contribution based on the estimated five per cent of park users that will be from the county.

Pogadl Park will also be home to the expansion Sylvan Lake Gulls of the Western Canadian Baseball League. The Gulls have started construction of their $7 million stadium ahead of the 2021 WCBL season.

The approved $750,000 applies to the first phase of Pogadl Park construction with council leaving the door open to considering further funding requests in the future.

Red Deer County previously contributed $1.5 million towards the capital construction of the NexSource Centre multiplex in downtown Sylvan Lake.
