First Market On Main has “Great start”

Jun 26, 2020 | 1:36 PM

The Town of Rocky Mountain House held its first Market On Main on Thursday, June 25 amidst the current health crisis.

The event which had been deemed in previous years as a great, “social gathering,” was visibly different with the mandated social distancing and instead of crowds all congregated to the center of the street, they were now split on two sides to allow for one-way foot traffic.

Anyone attending was directed to the one entrance on Main Street located just off of Highway 11A.

Town staff were placed at various other entry points to redirect anyone that was trying to enter, to ensure health and safety guidelines were met.

Rocky’s Economic Development Officer, Jeff Hartling, mentioned that most people were very respectful with social distancing and kept similar spacing as you would find in a grocery store.

Even with some the hindrances that come from following all of the AHS guidelines, Hartling said they still saw a very good turnout but with noticeably fewer seniors than in previous years.

It was evident, though, that there were also fewer vendors at Market On Main than usual.

“The Clearwater Farmers Market organization is not operating this year, we are down in number,” Hartling had mentioned, also bringing up the point that they were still accepting applications for future vendors to the weekly Thursday Market. Anyone wishing to do so is able to at the Town website or can stop in person at the recently re-opened Christenson Sport & Wellness Centre.

He had also explained that the new way vendors were operating by lining up back-to-back down the middle of the street facing outward was “positive” and that they will be continuing to monitor how things progress in the coming weeks.
