New electric utility rates take effect March 1

Feb 3, 2020 | 6:25 PM

The average Red Deer household’s electrical bill will increase by 87 cents per month starting March 1.

City council approved the 2020 Electric Utility Bylaw at its meeting on Monday. Changes will be reflected on April utility bills.

Electric utility rates are comprised of distribution, transmission, local access and other industry charges. Residents see these charges on electrical bills from their retail provider, a City release notes.

The transmission charge, the release continues, is for using the provincial transmission system, a cost passed on to residents by the Alberta Electric System Operator.

The distribution fee is for delivery of services, including building, operating and maintaining power lines and facilities, 24-hour emergency response, office operations, installing and reading electricity meters, providing billing to retailers, and providing safety and energy awareness and education.

The overall Electric, Light and Power increase is 2.19 per cent. As for other utilities, Water, Wastewater and Waste Management are set to increase by 2.50 per cent in 2020.
