Semi driver dead after crashing into stopped tow truck south of Red Deer

Jan 23, 2020 | 5:55 AM

One man is dead following a collision late Wednesday night south of Red Deer in which a semi plowed into the back of a stopped tow truck.

It was just after 11 p.m. when Innisfail and Blackfalds RCMP responded to the collision on the QE2 Highway southbound, south of Highway 42.

“The collision involved a semi-truck with trailers which collided with a stopped tow truck,” Alberta RCMP Corporal Laurel Scott says in a media release. “The driver of the semi-truck was unable to exit the truck, which caught fire. The 62-year-old driver of the semi was declared deceased on scene.”

Police say the tow truck was stopped and assisting a disabled vehicle and that the tow truck driver was out of his vehicle when the crash occurred. The tow truck suffered extreme damage, but the driver and the driver of the initial vehicle requiring assistance were not injured.
