Rocky applies for grant funding for new recycling bins

The Town of Rocky Mountain House has applied for a Community Champions Program grant from the Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC) hoping to receive up to $20,000.

The money would be used to install bins around town and on trails and pathways similar to the bear-proof bins that are already in place.

Communications Coordinator Laura Button stated that any money from the bottles collected in those bins would be put into general revenue.

The Town’s recent move to begin the program comes from a waste audit that was conducted last month by the waste reduction organization Sonnevera, with professional engineer Christina Seidel making an unusual discovery.

“The most surprising thing we found was just how many beverage containers we found in residential garbage,” Seidel noted.

Button also mentioned that the Town has no current plans to install the new beverage bins if the grant is not successful.

Mayor Tammy Burke is a member of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Associations (AUMA) Environment and Sustainability Committee, with Button mentioning that she is often discussing with fellow peers from across the province, ways to improve Rocky and reduce its environmental impact.
