Six Red Deer Rebels prospects will represent their province at the 2019 WHL Cup.

Hunter Mayo (SK), Parker Lalonde (SK), Jhett Larson (SK), Justen Maric (AB), Jace Weir (BC), and Carter Anderson (MB) have been named to their provincial teams for the tournament happening at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary later this month.

Mayo was selected 23rd overall by the Rebels at the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft in Red Deer. Weir was selected 38th overall, Anderson 51st overall, Maric 98th overall, Lalonde 114th overall and Larson 163rd overall.

Red Deer natives Nate Danielson, selected fifth overall by the Brandon Wheat Kings, and Tyler Mackenzie, a Medicine Hat Tigers draft pick, will also play for Team Alberta.

The WHL Cup features the highest-rated players in the under-16 age category from Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The tournament will take place from Wednesday, October 23 through Sunday, October 27.

The tournament will be a four-team round-robin format and is the first step in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence for players.

This year will mark the eighth year of the event, formerly known as the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup. The first ever WHL Cup was held in Blackfalds in 2009 and featured four of the top eight players selected in the 2012 NHL Draft.

The WHL Cup is made possible through financial support provided by the WHL, Hockey Manitoba, BC Hockey, Hockey Alberta, Saskatchewan Hockey Association and Hockey Canada.
