One of the best players to ever wear a Red Deer Rebels jersey is calling it a career.

Goalie Cam Ward has signed a one-day contract with the Carolina Hurricanes and is retiring as a member of the team he helped lead to a Stanley Cup.

General manager Don Waddell announced the signing and retirement Wednesday, calling Ward “a cornerstone for this organization for more than a decade.”

The 35-year-old won the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the 2006 playoffs and holds numerous club records for goalies, including 318 victories, 668 regular-season games played, a .557 winning percentage and 27 shutouts. After becoming a fixture in goal for Carolina from 2005-18, he spent his final NHL season with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Ward called it “an honour and a privilege to wear the Hurricanes jersey for 13 years.”

Prior to his NHL career, the Saskatoon native played his entire junior tenure with the Rebels.

It began when the Rebels selected him in the fourth round (63rd overall) of the 1999 WHL Bantam Draft, from the Sherwood Park Bantam AAA Flyers.

Ward made his WHL regular season debut with the Rebels on February 4, 2001 in spectacular fashion, stopping all 25 shots he faced in a 3-0 shutout of the Saskatoon Blades.

Ward kept the Rebels near the top of the league standings for the next three seasons as they won a second and third consecutive Central Division titles. The Rebels made it back to the WHL Championship Series twice, losing in the Eastern Conference Championship the other season.

His first full season in the WHL saw Ward claim his first of two Del Wilson Memorial Trophies as the WHL’s Top Goaltender. He was also presented with the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the WHL Player of the Year at the 2004 WHL Awards and later claimed the honour of CHL Goaltender of the Year award in the same year.

Through 160 WHL regular season games, Ward’s numbers stack up against the best of all-time with a 102-34-6-0 record, 2.12 goals-against-average and a .920 save percentage along with 11 shutouts. His playoff exploits were even better, sporting a 38-19-8-0 record in 65 games along with a 2.03 GAA, .928 SV%, and eight shutouts.

In 2017, Ward was named as the top player in Rebels franchise history in honour of the club’s 25th anniversary.
