One dead in crash east of Red Deer following police incident in Blackfalds

Jul 31, 2019 | 2:29 PM

A crash on Highway 11 east of Red Deer on Wednesday afternoon has left one person dead, according to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).

The incident began when Blackfalds RCMP were responding to a complaints of shots being fired in the town around 12:35 p.m. The vehicle they were looking for, a Ford Mustang, was located in Blackfalds and RCMP attempted a traffic stop.

The driver of the Mustang struck a marked RCMP vehicle before evading through a rural area and was followed into Red Deer.

A brief pursuit, which an RCMP spokesperson says lasted one minute, was halted for public safety reasons. Unmarked police vehicles continued to patrol rural areas for the Mustang.

At 1:45 p.m., the same vehicle was located on Highway 815 near Joffre by RCMP members in an unmarked vehicle. As it headed south, the driver avoided a spike belt before proceeding through a stop sign at the intersection with Hwy 11.

The Mustang was struck by an eastbound uninvolved pick-up truck which had the right of way.  The occupants of the truck were not injured.

However, it’s now been revealed that the passenger, a 24-year-old woman who was taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital, succumbed to her injuries.

A 27-year-old man seriously injured in the crash was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton in stable condition.

“ASIRT’s investigation will focus on police conduct and the circumstances surrounding the attempted apprehension and the subsequent collision. The RCMP remains responsible for the investigation of any offences committed by the man, both earlier in the day and at the time of the collision,” a release from ASIRT states.

Eastbound traffic was diverted onto Freedom Road (Township Road 383) while police investigated at the scene of the crash.

RCMP or ASIRT are yet to provide any further information on charges.
