New expansion project

Nova Gas Transmission adding more than just a pipeline to Clearwater County

The Edson Mainline Expansion Project, which will become part of the existing 24,000 kilometre Nova Gas Transmission Ltd. system, is currently under regulatory review with the National Energy Board.

Nova Gas filed an application with the NEB in April for approval to construct, own and operate the project.

“Pending regulatory approval, Nova Gas Transmission plans to commence construction activities on the project in quarter three of 2021,” explains Jennalee Copitts Communications Specialist, Canada Gas.

As part of the 2021 NGTL System Expansion Project, Nova Gas is proposing to build a 48.6 km section of a 48-inch diameter pipeline in Clearwater County. The project is currently under regulatory review, but construction is anticipated to start in quarter three of next year. The $509 million project is expected to create around 1,500 jobs.

“Nova Gas Transmissions Limited is very active in the Clearwater County area with a variety of expansion projects currently proposed and under regulatory review as well as some under construction,” Copitts noted.

Construction is nearly complete on a 30 megawatt compressor station unit and cooler addition at the Nordegg Compressor Station site, which is part of the Saddle West Expansion Project.

There is also another proposed 30 megawatt unit and cooler addition at the same site which is part of the 2021 Nova Gas Transmissions system expansion project which is undergoing regulatory review.

Also a part of the Clearwater West Expansion Project, NGTL is currently building a 30 megawatt compressor station unit addition at the Clearwater Compressor Station site, and another 30 megawatt unit addition at that site is also being proposed as part of a standalone project.

Being environmentally friendly is a large hurdle for many companies so NGTL has prepared an Environmental and Socioeconomic Assessment (ESA), which was a necessary part of the application to the National Energy board.

“In addition, an Environmental Protection Plan has been developed to identify the necessary environmental protection measures to be implemented for the project, which ensures responsible construction and results in a return to equivalent land capability,” claims Copitts.
