Scottish rain for the Highland Games at Westerner Park

Hundreds of people braved the Scottish-like rain on Saturday to enjoy the 71st Annual Red Deer Highland Games at Westerner Park.

The event featured piping and drumming, highland dancing, heavy events, tug-of-war, sheepdog demonstrations, Scottish County Dancing and a shortbread contest.

In addition, attendees also enjoyed selections from a variety of food and craft vendors, live music by the Celtic Jam Jars and a little history re-enacted by the 78th Fraser Highlanders, Red Stags Battle Group and Medieval Spinning demonstrations.

Jamie Munawych, President of the Red Deer Region Highland Dancing Association hopes the dancers participating at the event enjoy their experience.

“We have dancers from all across the province,” reveals Munawych. “World Champions are here and it’s just a great event all-around for people to come together and enjoy Scottish dancing.”

Chairperson Jennifer Meyn meanwhile says the event is all about celebrating Scottish culture.

“You don’t have to be Scottish to appreciate it but it just brings a bit of Scotland over,” explains Meyn. “It allows the population of Red Deer to come out and enjoy it. We also get people from Grande Prairie, Calgary, all over Alberta, Saskatchewan, B.C. and games are all across Canada and it’s just a way for Scottish people to get together and enjoy our heritage.”
