Crews respond to fire at Amethyst House on Friday

May 1, 2026 | 3:09 PM

An investigation is underway into what caused a fire at an apartment building in downtown Red Deer Friday afternoon.

The fire was at Amethyst House, which is operated by Canadian Mental Health Association, and is just south of 43 Street on 50 (Gaetz) Avenue.

Acting Deputy Chief with Red Deer Emergency Services, Cole Starling, says crews were on scene already for a short time, looking into some smoke that had been identified in the building.

While on scene, they discovered flames that Starling says were determined to be totally unrelated to the smoke, which also was dealt with.

“The situational awareness of our members, and their attention to detail, prevented the situation from escalating,” says Starling, noting the fire was quickly contained.

The cause remains under investigation, with the RCMP taking the investigational lead.

Alberta RCMP Cst. Mathew Howell says there was no one taken or treated by EMS due to the fire.

Some members of RDES and RCMP may remain on scene to investigate.
