Funds pouring in as Ryan Vandervlis faces long road to recovery

A team spokesperson for the Lethbridge Hurricanes tells rdnewsNOW that Vandervlis has emerged from his medically induced coma. He remains in intensive care at Foothills Hospital in Calgary.

A GoFundMe page set up for Lethbridge Hurricanes forward Ryan Vandervlis, who was injured in a campfire incident less than two weeks ago, has raised more than $34,000 in about 24 hours.

The page, called “Rally for Ryan,” is attributed to Friends of Ryan Vandervlis, on behalf of his parents Rene and Barb Vandervlis. It was created Sunday to help with the costs of his recovery.

As of 10:30 p.m. Monday, it had raised over $51,000, more than doubling the goal of $25,000.

“Donations to cover the cost of meals and living expenses while in Calgary, and to support Ryan’s recovery would be deeply appreciated and will be provided directly to the family.  Should donations exceed the actual cost of Ryan’s recovery, the excess amount will be donated in full to a not for profit organization or organization of Ryan’s choice,” the page says.

It explains Vandervlis, who is 20-years-old, faces “months of recovery and multiple surgeries” and is heavily sedated, after the June 15 incident at the family home of former teammate Tyler Wong. The incident also injured Hurricanes player Jordy Bellerive and former player Matt Alfaro.

His family from Red Deer is with him in Calgary, the page adds, saying they are grateful for the thoughts, prayers, and support of the community.

Jordy Bellerive and Matt Alfaro were also injured in the campfire accident on the night of June 15. They were part of a group gathered at the Cochrane area home of former Hurricane Tyler Wong.
