Red Deer mechanic heads to Toronto for national competition

Jul 24, 2018 | 2:29 PM

A Red Deer mechanic is one of only from eight across Canada who has qualified for the Yamaha Canadian Technician Grand Prix, taking place at Yamaha Motor Canada in Toronto this week.

Patrick Gibson works for Cycle Works Motorsports and brings 14 years of experience to the competition.

The Silver Certified / Gold Candidate from Yamaha Technical Academy started at the dealership in 2005 doing Pre-Delivery Inspections and is now organizing and overseeing day to day operations at the shop.

With a passion for building performance engines and keeping people at the front of the pack, no detail is overlooked or too small according to Gibson.

“When not working, I enjoy riding my motorcycle, hitting the dirt on two or four wheels, camping, fishing, hunting and spending time with my family,” says Gibson.

Held every two years, the July 24 and 25 event is described as an intense contest that will challenge the mechanical, electronic and customer service skills of Canada’s best Yamaha dealer service staff, with contestants taking part in a written examination, practical skills lab and customer service component.

At the conclusion, one talented employee will be awarded the opportunity to represent Yamaha Motor Canada at the 2018 World’s Technician Grand Prix in Japan in October.

The Canadian winner will be announced July 26.
