Court Briefs, Nov 16

Nov 16, 2017 | 8:36 AM

A man charged in relation to a break and enter at a home in Balmoral two years ago was sentenced in Red Deer Provincial Court on Wednesday.

Danny Bergeson was handed two years less a day behind bars, minus credit for eight months spent in pre-trial custody, along with one year’s probation and a 10-year firearms ban. He was also fined more than $7000.

The break in occurred at a rural property along Highway 11 and Range Road 265 east of Red Deer on the afternoon of Nov. 22, 2015. Shots were reported but no one was injured.

Bergeson was one of four men arrested in relation to the incident.

A man charged after shots were fired at a residence in Mustang Acres earlier this year was a no show for his trial last week.

Hol Dominik Garang, 25, faces six firearms counts along with two counts of assault with a weapon and one count of mischief.

Mounties were called just before 1 p.m. on March 7 to a report that two shots had been fired in a residence near 68 Street and 59 Avenue. Officers immediately began their search for a suspect, and located him on foot nearby, arresting him without incident a few minutes later.

Garang was scheduled to stand trial last Friday but failed to appear. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

A trial has been scheduled for a man who fled local Mounties in a stolen truck last summer.

Gregory Whitford, 37, of Nanton faces 13 counts in relation to the wild series of events that took place July 6, 2016.

Officers that afternoon noted a suspicious 2007 black Ford F350 near Parkland Drive in Sylvan Lake that had sustained some type of front end damage to the front driver’s side wheel. The officer ran a check of the license plate on the truck and found that it did not match.

The lone occupant of the truck jumped into the driver’s seat when he saw the officer approaching and purposely tried to hit the member while fleeing the scene. The member was able to jump out of the way, avoiding any injuries.

Despite having no front wheel on the driver’s side, the truck sped off through Sylvan Lake, eventually going on to Highway 11A, through Poplar Ridge and into the Burnt Lake Industrial Park. The truck then headed westbound on Burnt Lake Trail and eventually stopped at Range Road 283 where the driver was finally arrested. The truck was later found to have been stolen from the Rimbey area on July 2.

Whitford’s trial in Red Deer Provincial Court is slated for March 15, 2018.

Trial has been ordered for one of six people charged after local Mounties and the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team raided a drug trafficking ring last fall.

An investigation that began in June 2016 led to three homes in Sylvan Lake and one in Vanier Woods in Red Deer being searched on October 12 of last year.

Cocaine was seized along with various pills, buffing agents and other drug trafficking paraphernalia. Seven firearms were also seized.

Robyn Lehner, 33, faces charges which include possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance.

He was ordered to stand trial following a preliminary hearing in Red Deer Provincial Court last Friday. Trial dates have not been set.
