Court Briefs, May 17

May 17, 2017 | 10:39 AM

Already serving time for manslaughter, a Red Deer man has pleaded guilty to three unrelated robberies in our city.

Mark Bitterman, 34, was given a three-year sentence in Red Deer court on Tuesday that will be served at the same time as the 13 years he is already spending behind bars. He was also given a lifetime firearms ban.

The robberies took place between June 5 – 13, 2013 and targeted victims through an online escort site. In each of the first robberies, the victims were robbed of cash, credit and debit cards, and their vehicle.

Bitterman was previously convicted in the death of Leroy Rangen, whose body was found inside a freezer inside his apartment on May 3, 2013. Bitterman was initially charged with first degree murder before the count was downgraded to second degree murder. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in June 2016.

There’s been a delay in the start of a trial for a man charged in the fatal stabbing of a Red Deer woman near Fox Creek two years ago.

Daniel Goodridge was 28-years-old when he was arrested and charged with first and second degree murder in relation to the incident from the morning of June 30, 2015.

RCMP were called to a work camp in the Fox Creek area and found two people who had been stabbed to death.

The victims were identified as Hally Dubois, 50, of Red Deer and David Derksen, 37, of La Crete.

The charges against Goodridge were stayed last year before being brought forward again. Trial was to begin in Grande Prairie court on Monday, however it was delayed after the defence was granted a four-week adjournment.

The case is due back in court on June 12.

A Sylvan Lake man accused of producing and passing fake currency will go to trial later this year.

Ryan James Bain, 28, was arrested in March after police searched his home and seized large amounts of counterfeit Canadian currency.

Sylvan Lake Mounties later learned several local businesses had recently been paid for various goods and services using fake money.

Bain faces a total of 13 charges. His trial in Red Deer court has been scheduled for November 27.
