A group of Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School staff, alumni and supporters recently celebrated a milestone by making their 150th blood donation.

The school’s blood drive started in September 2016 with the goal of 150 donations by the end of June 2017, just in time for Canada’s 150th birthday.

“Students, family, friends, and other supporters sign up to be a Partner for Life with Lindsay Thurber,” said Sharon Schultz, Finish Line Program coordinator with Red Deer Public Schools.

Schultz said leading up to the weekend that it was an exciting time to know that someone would be the donor who brought the total to the goal number.

“I am passionate about blood donations. At the age of five I was diagnosed with acute purpura (a blood clotting disease), and I received blood and can vividly remember the transfusions,” said Schultz.

The 150th donor was Lisa Lynch, a Thurber graduate. Lynch’s daughter also attended Thurber and her son is entering the school in the fall.

Grade 12 student Parker Ackerman also donated on Saturday, June 28 and Schultz said getting youth involved in this process is extremely valuable.

“History and research shows that having individuals begin the donation process at a young age is an effective way to encourage regular donations,” said Schultz.

Both Schultz’s husband and sister received blood transfusions while undergoing chemotherapy treatments for cancer.

“Giving blood is a true gift. There are no strings attached to this gift. On the contrary, you do not even know who will receive your donation or what a difference you may make in someone’s life.”
