Tight contest

Rebels fall in preseason opener against Hitmen

Sep 4, 2026 | 10:02 PM

The Red Deer Rebels dropped their preseason opener to the Calgary Hitmen on Friday night.

Tied 2-2 at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex in the third period, Hitmen forward Julien Maze scored with 1:15 remaining in the game to give his team the lead and eventually the 3-2 win.

Maze also scored the opening goal just 22 seconds into the first period, but Rebels forward Luke Jamieson found the equalizer over eight minutes later.

Calgary’s Teague McGlynn then gave the Hitmen a 2-1 lead later in the opening frame.

They held that lead until nearly midway through the third period when Rebels forward Luc Trevors tied it on the power play off the pass from defenceman Noah Chadi.

Unfortunately for the Rebels, they were unable to find the back of the net again, and Calgary took advantage late in the contest.

Rebels goaltender Peyton Shore and Chase Nielson split duties in net, with Shore saving 16 of 18 shots and Nielson with 15 saves on 16 shots.

Next up, the Rebels will face the Hitmen in a rematch on Saturday at the Centrum at 6 p.m.
