Olds RCMP to recognize youth through Operation Freeze this summer

Olds RCMP, along with Calgary Police and Lethbridge Police, are carrying out Operation Freeze this summer, but it isn’t your typical operation.

Along with other partner, Circle K, members will recognize youth who make positive contributions to their communities.

Operation Freeze has been running for more than 20 years, fostering stronger relationships between youth and law enforcement by rewarding good deeds and responsible behaviour with coupons for Frosters (at Circle K locations.

In a release, the parties note the initiative encourages officers to recognize young people who demonstrate leadership, kindness and community spirit. Youth may receive a coupon for actions such as wearing a bicycle helmet, volunteering, participating in community activities, helping others, using crosswalks safely, or picking up litter.

S/Sgt. Jamie Day with Olds RCMP tells rdnewsNOW the initiative will break down barriers.

“When most people see police lights, the unfortunate part of it is that it’s not a good day for that person, or others present; it’s usually somebody’s worst day. So people see us more in that light than in a positive one,” Day said.

“This way, when they do see us [during Operation Freeze], they can see that we are human. We’re looking for engagement to build that trust with them.”

In the end, they say, it’s all about celebrating safe, responsible and community-minded actions, and encouraging young people to take pride in helping create safer, stronger communities.

“Operation Freeze is about more than handing out a coupon,” says Sherry Coey, Senior Manager of Safety and Security for Western Canada, Circle K.

“It creates positive interactions between youth and police, recognizes young people who are making good choices and demonstrates the impact of strong community partnerships.”

Day added that by the end of summer, his detachment will have handed out hundreds of coupons to deserving kids.
