Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools Board of Trustees named Monica Andrew as the 2026 Council of Catholic School Superintendents of Alberta (CCSSA) Excellence in Catholic Education Leadership Award recipient.

Andrew has spent 23 years as an educator, and the honour recognizes her impact as a teacher, counsellor, and spiritual pillar within the division.

She began her teaching career in Innisfail and now teaches at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Olds.

The division says Andrew is often described by colleagues as the matriarch of her school community for balancing high professional standards with a gentle, compassionate approach.

Holy Trinity Catholic School Principal Jayme Locke said, “When I asked the staff how they would describe Monica, they described Monica as the most highly respected teacher here,” said Holy Trinity Catholic School Principal Jayme Locke.

“Everyone trusts her and appreciates her grounded faith. She has a way of holding us accountable to do what is right, while always leading with a humble heart.”

She also leads the way in many different aspects outside of the classroom, including volunteering for the school breakfast program, serving on community boards, and leading various ministries—including music, liturgy, and sacramental preparation.

The division explained that Andrew’s teaching philosophy is based on the belief that faith is an action.

She involves her students in projects at local food banks and church fundraisers. In doing so, the division says she demonstrates that the mission of Christ is lived through daily acts of kindness and hard work.

Andrew also has a unique ability to reach students who feel disconnected.

One notable success story involved a student who struggled to remain in class and rarely communicated. Through Mrs. Andrew’s mentorship—which included coaching him for a Knights of Columbus service event—the student gained the confidence to engage with his community.

“It was truly transformative for him. She helped him to know his worth,” Locke said.

In a testament to her impact, the staff and students at Holy Trinity purchased a plaque of St. Monica, the Patron Saint of Mothers, to hang above her door as a gesture of love that follows her year-to-year, despite the fact that she prefers not to be formally recognized for her efforts.

“The Excellence in Catholic Education Award is presented annually to an educator who is a dedicated faith leader and educator,” stated Dr. Rhonda Nixon, Superintendent. “Monica is a servant leader whose humility has stopped her in the past from accepting a nomination for this award. I am grateful that her husband convinced her to be acknowledged and celebrated.”

“Monica Andrew authentically lives the mission of Christ every day,” shared Mr. Chris Andrew, Chair, Board of Trustees. “She is a faith-filled educator who makes Christ known to children through her genuine goodness. We are blessed to have her in our division.”
