Sutter Fund Chiefs begin Esso Cup with win over Quebec

Apr 20, 2026 | 10:18 AM

The U18 AAA Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs’ push for a national title got off to a hot start on Sunday.

Yesterday, the Chiefs defeated As de Quebec 6-2 to win their first game at the 2026 Esso Cup in Dieppe, New Brunswick.

Red Deer dominated their opponents, outshooting them 32-14.

After Quebec tied the game 2-2 in the second period, Red Deer scored four unanswered goals to gain an important victory in the U18 Women’s National Club Championship tournament.

Kendall Hammer, Reece Lacina (power play), Jensyn Stephenson, Addison Shaw, Violet Green, and Macy Morrison all found the back of the net for Red Deer.

In the meantime, goaltender Brylee Hull made 12 saves on 14 shots to secure the win.

“Coming off the long day of travel yesterday, it was good to get in a short practice to get a feel for the rink and get used to a new place,” said Stephenson in a media release. “It is easy dealing with our emotions; we have a great coach who believes in us, and we believe in ourselves too. It’s been quite a journey to get here, but we just play another game because we’ve been through these types of games before.”

Next up, the Chiefs will face the Moncton Rockets on Monday, April 20, at 7 p.m. AT. They’ll then face the Winnipeg Ice on April 21 at 3 p.m. AT, the Northern Selects on April 22 at 11 a.m. AT, and the Stoney Creek Sabres on April 23 at 11 a.m. to wrap up preliminary action.
