Modernized Innisfail Aquatic Centre reopens after nine months

Apr 20, 2026 | 1:37 PM

The Innisfail Aquatic Centre has officially reopened.

The start of the modernization project began in July last year and was closed for nine months before reopening today.

Innisfail Mayor Jean Barclay said it was an exciting day for the community.

“It’s a little bit less than the time that we allotted for it, and it’s also under budget, but I know so many people in the community have commented how much they miss being here, especially over the winter months,” she said. “We are very excited to get this opened up today.”

The budgeted amount for the project was set at just under $15 million in 2025, and the final cost of the modernization is expected to be finalized over the next few months.

The Town of Innisfail applied for a $6.3 million grant through the Government of Canada’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program but was rejected.

“We did apply for grants, but we did not receive any,” Barclay said. “Right now, it’s Innisfail taxpayer-supported. We weren’t necessarily expecting the grants, and that’s why we stuck to the budget. We are in discussions with Red Deer County to share some of the capital costs because we know their residents use this facility too.”

The facility originally opened in 1987 but had not undergone any significant upgrades until now.

Among the new upgrades inside the facility are a new mechanical room, new tiling on the pool deck, a new hot tub basin, and an upgraded steam room.

Meanwhile, on the outside, there is new cladding, updated windows, and a new roof.

“The mechanical room has been completely refurbished, so everything in there is new,” Barclay said. “When you walk in the pool area, it feels like the space is larger even though it isn’t, and I think it’s because it’s a bright white colour. The hot tub and sauna, which were in and out of service for so many months, have all been replaced. I’m hoping that people will come in here, and they will feel happy to see this. I know when I come in, I notice how bright it is compared to what it used to be. It feels like a facility from 2026 instead of from 1987.”
