City of Red Deer shines light on essential services for National 211 Day

The City of Red Deer is joining communities across North America on Wednesday to recognize National 211 Day, an annual campaign celebrating the crucial role of 211.

As Red Deer City Hall lights up in red Wednesday evening, 211 Alberta reminds residents that help for life’s challenges is available 24/7.

Officials with 211 Alberta say the service is a free, confidential service that connects Albertans to essential community, social, health, and government resources. Whether it’s finding housing, accessing mental health services, or navigating financial aid, officials say 211 serves as a trusted guide, offering compassionate support in over 240 languages.

211 Helps Strengthen the Community of Red Deer

In 2025, officials acknowledge the need for support in Red Deer was significant, with 211 Alberta responding to 1,528 contacts from residents. These are said to have included 1,255 phone calls, 108 texts, 153 online chats, and 12 emails.

Through these interactions, officials say 3,239 distinct needs were identified within the city. They say the data sheds light on the key challenges faced by Red Deer residents:

• Basic Needs: The top concern, with 779 needs identified related to housing, shelter, food, and transportation.

• Income Supports and Employment: 745 needs highlighted ongoing financial struggles in the community.

• Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder: 452 needs underscored the demand for mental health and addiction support services.

“Across central Alberta, we see every day how critical 211 is for people trying to navigate complex challenges,” says Chelsea O’Donoghue, Chief Executive Officer of United Way Central Alberta in Red Deer, in a press release. “211 is often the first place individuals and families turn when they need clear, trusted information. Beyond connecting to vital supports, it helps community partners understand where gaps exist, so we can strengthen local services and ensure no one is left trying to find help on their own”.

Help Starts Here

Officials say 211 is more than just a number; but a connection to a real person who cares. The organization says Community Navigators are trained professionals who listen without judgment and help individuals navigate complex social systems to find the right resources.

“211 Alberta meets people where they are right now and can help prevent a challenge from becoming a crisis,” says Patricia Skagen-Emokpae, Director, 211 Alberta. “By providing timely connections to the right resources—whether that’s food security or mental health support—we are helping Albertans connect to support so they can build stability and resilience when they need it most.”

United Glow

Officials explain that the red illumination of Red Deer City Hall Wednesday night is part of the United Glow effort, a national initiative celebrating 211 Day through the lighting of monuments and landmarks across Canada.

Residents are encouraged to take a photo of the landmark lit in red and share it on social media, using the hashtags #211DayCanada, #UnitedGlow, #211Alberta and #HelpStartsHere to spread the word.
