Man accused of walking near Sundre school with loaded shotgun, scheduled for trial

Feb 3, 2026 | 10:24 AM

A trial date has been set for a central Alberta man accused of walking near a school in Sundre with a loaded shotgun last year, prompting a school lockdown and shelter in place for the community.

Jason Kelly Burns, 33, of Mountain View County, is scheduled for trial in Didsbury Court of Justice on July 8, 2026. He faces six counts in relation to the incident last fall.

It was on Sept. 26, 2025, at 7:28 a.m. when Sundre RCMP responded to a 911 call reporting a man with a 12-gauge shotgun in the vicinity of a school. As a precaution, area schools were placed in lockdown and a shelter-in-place alert was issued to the community.

Officers from Sundre, Didsbury and Olds detachments, along with Police Dog Services, were called in to assist. A tip led RCMP to a residence on 4 Street, where police set up containment and attempted to locate the suspect.

At around 9:15 a.m., the suspect exited the home and surrendered to police without incident.

A search warrant was later executed at the residence, resulting in the seizure of four firearms stored in a safe, one unsecured loaded shotgun, drug trafficking paraphernalia and methamphetamine.

Jason Burns was charged with assault, two counts of uttering threats, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

He was remanded into custody following a judicial hearing.
