Hometown captain Talon Brigley set to break Rebels all-time regular season games record

You need talent, toughness, and a certain amount of luck to play over 300 games in the Western Hockey League, let alone with the same franchise.

Red Deer Rebels captain Talon Brigley has all three of those attributes as he recently reached that milestone.

However, on Friday, the 20-year-old Sylvan Laker is set to become the club’s all-time leader in regular-season games played with 302.

An achievement that not many players in the history of the WHL can say they’ve achieved.

“It’s really special to me, especially being from Red Deer and growing up a Rebels fan and coming to the games as a kid,” Brigley said on Thursday, 24 hours before accomplishing the feat.

“I never really thought that I’d be here this long, to be honest. You never really think that far ahead, but to be able to accomplish that with one team, especially Red Deer, with everything they’ve done for me in my career. It means the world to me to do that.”

On Friday night, Brigley will etch his name in the record books with friends, family, teammates, and fans in attendance.

It’s an accomplishment he never thought he’d be able to reach.

“I wouldn’t really believe you, to be honest. I didn’t even think that was possible to play that many games in this league,” he said when asked what a younger version of himself would think.

“It’s an honour to play that many games in this jersey and to be a part of this organization for that long.”

Brigley will pass Jonathan Zukiwsky, who played 301 regular-season games in a Rebels uniform over five seasons from 1993 to 1998.

Zukiwsky spent his full major junior hockey career in Red Deer after he was drafted by the Rebels 63rd overall in the fifth round of the 1992 WHL Prospects Draft.

In an interview with rdnewsNOW, Zukiwsky wanted to congratulate Brigley on passing him.

“It’s a great achievement for any organization, and it’s an honour that he’s taking over the record for the most games played for the Red Deer Rebels,” Zukiwsky said. “I hope it’s a great night.”

The now 48-year-old said he last played in Red Deer 28 years ago and thought his record would last.

However, an injury in his 20-year-old season in 1997-98 was cut short by an injury after tearing his abdominal muscle. He only suited up in 34 games that year.

“It was a different game back in the 90s, where there was a line brawl every week you were in, but I wasn’t a super tough guy… Overall, I played four of the five seasons, almost all of the games,” Zukiwsky said.

Zukiwsky actually played against Talon’s father, Travis, both in minor hockey and when Travis suited up for the Lethbridge Hurricanes from 1994 to 1997.

“To play even three years with one team in the dub is an achievement, and for Talon to play all five years, stay mostly healthy, and be a contributing player, that’s a great honour.”

Brigley was drafted by the Rebels 24th overall in the second round of the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft.

Since then, he’s climbed the ladder from the bottom of the lineup to the captain of the Rebels this season. He’s potted 55 goals and 62 assists in that time.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys in the room that haven’t played too many games, so they think it’s pretty crazy,” Brigley said. “It’s definitely been the talk around the room. I’m looking forward to Friday and getting it over with so it gets put behind us and we can focus more on the games ahead.”

As for what’s next for Brigley after this season, he recently committed to play NCAA Div. I hockey at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut.

He said the team offered him a scholarship in December and felt it was the perfect spot.

“The biggest thing was just the way that they play, I think it fits perfectly with me. Their facility is beautiful, and it’s hard to say no to that. The education is top-notch, too,” he said.

“It’s a fresh start for me, which is good. It’ll be good to meet some new people and get out of my house. I’ve been there my whole life and haven’t been able to billet, so I’m looking forward to a change.”
