The driver in a scary incident in Penhold on June 13 has turned himself into police and is cooperating.

A video posted to Facebook on July 15 by the town of Penhold shows a pickup truck fly through an intersection along Hwy 2A at Hawkridge Boulevard in Penhold, as a group of young children are halfway through the crosswalk.

The incident happened around 12:12 p.m.

In dashcam footage from a truck stopped in the right-hand lane, the flashing crosswalk lights can be seen blinking for a few seconds before the truck in the left lane drives straight through.

Alberta and Innisfail RCMP confirmed Wednesday the driver presented himself to the police detachment over the last 24 hours, after video of the incident went viral.

Charges are being considered, RCMP confirm.

“Drivers and pedestrians all have a role to play when it comes to safety. Drivers need to slow down, take those extra moments to ensure that the way is clear before proceeding,” says Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, Alberta RCMP.

“Pedestrians need to ensure that oncoming traffic sees them and stops before proceeding even when they have the right of way. If a collision occurs, everyone loses.”

RCMP clarify that this was before the end of the school year, hence the group of kids walking together. The intersection is also less than 200 metres from a pre-school, though it’s not confirmed if that is where the kids were from.
