Update: Empire Building demolition postponed

Update: The City of  Red Deer has announced, due to some unexpected circumstances, the demolition will be postponed while the contractor proceeds with investigation and preparation work.

An update will be provided when a new timeline is determined.

Residents and business owners in downtown Red Deer can expect some sidewalk and parking closures as crews work to demolish the Empire Building located at 4909, 48 Street.

Starting June 27 through June 30, city officials say the Empire Building will be demolished, with cleanup and site restoration continuing in the weeks that follow.

To ensure public safety during the work, on-street parking and sidewalks beside 4907 and 4909, 48 Street will be closed from June 27 to June 30. City officials further note, the south alleyway behind the building will be closed to through traffic June 27 to July 7, but access to nearby parking lots will remain open.

The city reminds the public to stay clear of the site. Officials say the work zone will be fenced off and secured, and after-hours security will be in place. The city says it understands construction can be disruptive and appreciates your patience as they complete this important work.
