Controlled burns

Fire permit season in Lacombe County begins March 1

Lacombe County is reminding the public that fire permit season begins on March 1.

Officials say it’s important for all county residents and businesses to know for not only community safety but for environmental protection.

Fire permits are required for controlled burns and unauthorized burning could lead to charges and fines.

A fire permit is required when an outdoor fire is lit for any other purpose than as a camp fire for cooking or warming purposes between Match 1 and Oct. 31, each year. The county says this timeframe can be extended if the risk of wildfire still exists.

To acquire a fire permit, those hoping to do so can visit the Lacombe County office during regular business hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or call them at 403-782-8959. An online application can also be filled out at lacombecounty.com/firepermit.

“Fire permits are not only free and easy to obtain, but they also provide a crucial layer of safety for property owners and their neighbours,” said Dion Burlock, Director of Community Services.

“Each permit includes detailed requirements to guarantee that burns are conducted safely and responsibly.”

Burlock added, it’s important to monitor any winter burn piles as they can often smoulder and reignite, posing a significant fire risk in the spring. For those who have done some burning this fall and winter, they should re-check it to make sure the fire is completely out.

“It’s critical to ensure that all controlled burns are fully extinguished and to adhere to safe burning practices throughout the year,” Burlock said.

Before lighting any fire, a permit holder must take precautions to ensure the fire is controlled at all times, note county officials.

In addition, the property owner will be held financially responsible for fires resulting from failure to comply with permit conditions. These include $720 per hour for a fire truck, $720 per hour for a water truck, $720 per hour for rapid response unit and mini pumper, $720 per hour for a rescue truck, and $210 per hour for a command vehicle.
