Ponoka town council approves 2025 Utility Rates Bylaw

Dec 12, 2024 | 4:55 PM

Ponoka town council recently approved the 2025 Utility Rate Bylaw, which includes an increase from 2024.

Overall, if a family uses 20 cubic metres of water per month, they will see an estimated monthly utility rate increase of 3.8 per cent, or $5.78, for water, sewer, curbside waste collection and storm sewer fees in 2025.

Town officials attribute the increase to inflationary costs based on an annual estimated Alberta Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the next year. It it also a response to direction from the provincial government discouraging municipalities from using property taxes or grant funding to help pay for utilities.

The 2025 utility rates will include the following:

  • Water consumption rates and flat rates will increase by CPI;
  • Sewer consumption and flat rates will increase by CPI;
  • Curbside waste collection fees will increase by 3.6 per cent to cover operational costs; and
  • A new monthly storm drainage system fee of $2 for residential and $2.50 for commercial will cover operational and capital costs for that utility in order for it to be self-sustaining in accordance with provincial government direction.

The new rates go into effect Jan. 1, 2025.
