Red Deer Minor Hockey loses bid to host 2025 Telus Cup

May 2, 2024 | 1:55 PM

Red Deer’s bid to host the 2025 Telus Cup has come up just short.

The tournament is the national championship for the men’s U18 AAA level.

Red Deer Minor Hockey (RDMH) told rdnewsNOW in March that it was hoping to host.

Instead, it will be the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds of the B.C. Elite Hockey League hosting it April 21-27 at the Chilliwack Coliseum. It’ll be the tournament’s first time being hosted on the west coast since 2017.

Al Sim, RDMH president, says board director Scott Cruickshank should be credited with putting together an excellent bid.

“We are disappointed and we know we could’ve done a hell of a job,” says Sim, noting that the bid included letters of support from several local mayors and Chief Wilton Littlechild.

Hockey Canada also announced this week that the 2025 Esso Cup, the national championship for female hockey, will be hosted in Lloydminster by the local Steelers club.

Fans can sign up now to receive ticket information about the 2025 Esso Cup and 2025 TELUS Cup as it becomes available.
