Red Deer Minor Hockey bidding to host 2025 Telus Cup

Mar 6, 2024 | 1:58 PM

Red Deer Minor Hockey has put in a bid to host the 2025 Telus Cup.

The tournament, which is scheduled for April 21-27 of next year, is the national championship for the highest level of U18 hockey in Canada. It features six teams, including the host.

Al Sim, president, Red Deer Minor Hockey, says a decision is anticipated from Hockey Canada by April.

“We’ve heard there’s one other Alberta bid, but haven’t heard formally,” he shares. “We have a history of hosting these national events; we believe we’re the number one candidate.”

Red Deer’s bid is bolstered by letters of support from the municipalities of Lacombe, Blackfalds and Sylvan Lake, as well Central Sport, Tourism Red Deer, Hotels Red Deer, and somebody the association has a close relationship with, Chief Wilton Littlechild.

“The economic spinoff within the community would be huge with the teams coming,” says Sim, adding that the league has confidence the U18 AAA Optimist Chiefs will be up for not just the task of hosting, but being competitive.

The team is currently in the second round of the playoffs for this season and would hope to build off that experience for next season and hosting the Telus Cup.

Sim says if the bid is successful, the tournament will be hosted exclusively at Servus Arena.

Red Deer last hosted the Telus Cup in 2007, and last held the top female national championship, the Esso Cup, in 2015.

Red Deer won gold at the Telus Cup in 2012 and 2013, silver in 1994, 1995 and 2007 (host), and a bronze in 2004. It has the second most appearances in Telus Cup history, qualifying 10 times, eight of which led to a medal round appearance.
