Town of Ponoka gives cybersecurity update: investigation ongoing

The Town of Ponoka is providing an update regarding their digital network following a cybersecurity breach by an unauthorized third party this February.

The Town says they are continuing to work with external cybersecurity experts who are conducting an ongoing forensic investigation into the matter.

“The Town takes the privacy and security of personal information in our care very seriously,” said officials in a release.

When the cybersecurity incident occurred on February 20, the Town says they acted immediately to contain the breach and engaged cybersecurity experts to assist with containment, remediation and to initiate a forensic investigation to determine what, if any, personal data was impacted.

As the investigation continues, they state any individuals or businesses that may have had confidential or personally identifiable information exposed will be notified. They confirm the incident has been reported to law enforcement and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner

They say the forensic investigation involves a thorough review of the potentially impacted systems and data.The Town says they have also implemented enhanced security measures to better prevent an incident of this nature from reoccurring in the future.

The Town is thanking residents for their patience and understanding as they continue working to fully address the matter.
