Sexual Violence Awareness Month this May offers chance to listen and learn

Apr 21, 2024 | 11:00 AM

The Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre (CASASC) is set to observe Sexual Violence Awareness Month (SVAM) this May, with learning opportunities happening throughout the month.

CASASC will provide resources and information on social media and on their website that can help victims, supports and the community under the C.A.R.E model.

  • Week 1: Consent (May 1 – May 8)
  • Week 2: Action (May 9 – May 15)
  • Week 3: Respect (May 16 – May 22)
  • Week 4: Education (May 23 – May 31)

The theme of SVAM this year is ‘Empowering Voices, Creating Change.’

“Listening to survivors without judgment and believing their experiences can be incredibly empowering to victims,” says Christi Albers-Manicke, communications manager.

“Empowering survivors is crucial for them to have the courage to step forward and report and begin their healing process.”

In 2024, reported sexual assault rates in Alberta have increased.

According to Statistics Canada, in 2021, there were a total of 34,242 police-reported sexual assaults (including levels 1, 2, and 3) across the country. This rate was 18 per cent higher than in 2020 and marked the highest rate since 1996.

Many survivors of sexual violence choose not to report their experiences, however.

This is why creating safe spaces where survivors can share their stories without feeling the brunt of stigma is critically important.

“Advocating for change in our communities and workplaces is another way to help survivors and practice prevention. Individuals, community groups and business can raise awareness about sexual violence and advocate for policy changes,” says Albers-Manicke

“Supporting and donating to organizations like CASASC who work to improve laws, increase funding for survivor services, and promote prevention education is also crucial to create a community of respect.”
