Red Deer Polytechnic confirms student death on-campus

Apr 18, 2024 | 1:32 PM

Alberta RCMP and Red Deer Polytechnic have released new statements regarding a fire that occurred on campus this past Sunday, April 14.

The incident has been the subject of online rumours and speculation since it occurred, leading to misinformation and disinformation.

The new statements offer clarity, though not on everything.

The fire occurred at about 6 a.m., it’s said, at the RDP logo monogram statue near the main campus entrance.

“Red Deer RCMP received a request to conduct a welfare check on an individual who may be suicidal,” RCMP confirm.

“While making patrols, officers located a vehicle at Red Deer Polytechnic. Nearby, officers located a small fire, and upon further investigation, a deceased individual was located. The deceased has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Although the investigation is still ongoing, RCMP believe the death to be non-criminal.”

On Thursday, Red Deer Polytechnic officials shared the following:

“It is with great sadness that Red Deer Polytechnic confirms that a student recently passed away on campus,” they say. “Counselling services and additional supports are available to our students and employees. RDP requests that the public respects the privacy of the student’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

Neither RDP nor RCMP anticipate offering any further updates.
