Local boxer Brody Andrie has been crowned national champion in the 57 kg youth division at the prestigious Canada Cup & Junior Youth Canadian Championships.

Andrie, a Grade 12 at St. Joseph High School, competed at the event in Calgary from March 20-24.

A dedicated member of Team Alberta and fighting out of Lacombe’s Shadow Boxing Club, Andrie’s gold is a remarkable milestone as it makes him the first central Alberta boxed to become national champ in decades.

“This win is not just for me, but for everyone who has supported me along the way,” says Andrie. “I’m proud to bring this championship back to Lacombe and hope to inspire other young athletes in our community.”

St. Joseph Principal Gary Gylander, expressed his admiration for the teen’s achievement.

“Brody’s success is a testament to his hard work, perseverance, and the support of his coaches and community,” he says. “We are incredibly proud of him and look forward to seeing what the future holds for this outstanding young athlete.”

Andrie beat Charles Brillon, a boxer out of Quebec for the gold medal.

From Red Deer’s Black Rock Boxing Club, Misha Polishchuk won gold in the junior C 66kg category, and Yegor Smorodnikov won silver in the youth 67 kg category.
