Feb 27, 2024 | 3:43 PM

Five student-athletes from the Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Curling program have been celebrated by the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) for their outstanding play and contributions to their sport.

Cassidy Blair of the RDP Mixed Curling team was recognized as ACAC Women’s Curler of the Year.

“As a first-year student-athlete, Cassidy has demonstrated talent and leadership beyond her years,” says Brad Hamilton, Red Deer Polytechnic Curling Head Coach. “She has made an impact on her team, the RDP Curling program and league. Cassidy has done a great job of moving up to skip and leading her team to the final game at the ACAC Championships where they lost a tough one to Lakeland.”

Throughout the weekend, Blair and her teammates put forth a strong effort and picked up ACAC silver at Airdrie Curling Club.

Third-year Nicole Homan received the prestigious Charles Morter Memorial Award for making a positive impact on and off the ice. She was selected by ACAC Curling Coaches for best exemplifying Morter’s spirit, commitment, leadership and sportsmanship toward other curlers.

“Nicole is a dedicated student-athlete who is always willing to help,” says Hamilton. “She leads by example and helps to grow the game at all levels.”

RDP’s Blair (skip) and Teryn Herder (lead) were honoured as ACAC Mixed Curling All-Conference team selections. As members of the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens, Cuyler Desormeau (skip), Homan (lead) and Kaylee Raniseth (second) were named to the ACAC Women’s Curling All-Conference team.

“I want to congratulate Cassidy, Teryn, Cuyler, Nicole and Kaylee on making their All-Conference teams,” adds Hamilton. “They have worked hard to continue developing their curling skills and are great ambassadors for Red Deer Polytechnic and the RDP Curling program.”

As one of the outstanding RDP representatives, Homan has shared her time and curling knowledge with Special Olympics and high school athletes as a volunteer coach. She has also volunteered with the Red Deer Curling Club and at the Red Deer Curling Classic to give back to the curling community. As a Bachelor of Education Secondary student, Homan mentors and supports youth by volunteering for school reading programs.

Along with her extensive volunteer efforts, Homan has contributed to RDP Queens Curling on the ice. The Queens earned a 10-2 combined record at the ACAC Fall and Winter Regionals, qualifying for the playoffs. At the ACAC Curling Championships, the RDP Queens were downed by the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings in the bronze medal game.

“I am proud of the student-athletes for receiving this special recognition at the conference level,” says Randy Stewart, Manager, Athletics and Student Life at RDP. “This acknowledgement is not only a reflection of their curling talent, but also of their diligence and dedication throughout the season. I also want to commend head coach Brad Hamilton and his staff for their commitment to building a competitive RDP Curling program that encourages academic success and good citizenship in the community.”

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings defeated the Concordia University Thunder in the men’s final, winning gold and qualifying for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)/Curling Canada College Championships. The event will be held in Fredericton, New Brunswick from March 12-16.
