Provincial grant giving boost to YMCA summer camp
Alberta’s government has announced it is providing the YMCA with $932,000 from the Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) so youth can experience Alberta’s great outdoors.
Government officials say summer camp provides many youth with a chance to experience the province’s natural landscape, learn new lifelong skills and build strong friendships. Provincial officials say Camp Chief Hector YMCA makes summer camp a reality for youth every year, and the government is committed to supporting the YMCA’s work to provide Albertans with extraordinary summer camp experiences for years to come.
“Summer camp is important for kids to grow, gain confidence, stay healthy and make new friends, and with this CFEP grant, Camp Chief Hector can continue to share that magic,” says Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women. “This funding will help upgrade and make camp facilities more accessible, allowing more young Albertans to take part in this tradition.”
With funding from the CFEP, the government says Camp Chief Hector’s facilities will be refurbished. In addition to a lodge kitchen renovation, washrooms will be renovated and modified to become fully accessible and gender-neutral, a secondary access road will be developed, and an electric main gate will be installed, increasing safety. The government says this project will create jobs in the region and open the door for many more Alberta youth to participate in summer camp.
