A Better World shares 2023 progress report: project progress steady

Feb 1, 2024 | 4:52 PM

Lacombe-based non-profit organization A Better World (ABW) has released their progress updates for 2023.

The international development organization has completed various humanitarian projects in more than 15 countries over the past 34 years, in education, healthcare, and clean water systems, with the goal of breaking the cycle of poverty.

ABW officials say their projects are either holding pace or exceeding in their primary outcome measurements.

The organization exceeded their 2023 goals in building water catchment systems, toilets in schools and clinics, and bringing water to communities. They met their goals in health care improvements, were close to their goal in number of classrooms built, and under their goal in number of completed surgeries due to a complex patient case, ABW officials says.

The organization has increased their goals for 2024 in number of water catchment systems, toilets in schools, and water wells, with a slight increase for classroom builds. Health care improvement goals have slightly decreased and number of surgeries has stayed the same.

ABW officials say cost differences between the years depend on which countries projects are taking place in, exchange rates, and project size.

By 2030, the goal for the organization is to have 75,000 students enrolled in their classrooms, who will also have access to their health services and clean water. As of December 31, 2023, there are 57,675 students enrolled.

In addition to the statistics, ABW says their Kenya rehabilitation program participated in providing services to 137 children with disabilities in three schools and in more than 500 clinic visits to five remote sites. They say they helped by providing equipment and training for rehab staff, as well as funding to subsidize travel and other expenses to ensure the programs can continue assisting underserved populations.

Other projects and services completed include kitchens built at schools, free dental services provided by Canadian dentists, and local projects like the Saruk Centre for Leadership Development.
